Google has quietly introduced a new application, Google AI Edge Gallery, enabling users to download and execute AI models directly on their smartphones without the need for an internet connection. Currently available for Android devices, with an iOS version forthcoming, this app allows for offline operation of various AI models sourced from platforms like Hugging Face.
The AI Edge Gallery app offers functionalities such as image generation, question answering, and code writing/editing.Users can select tasks like “Ask Image” or “AI Chat,” which then present a list of compatible models, including Google’s own Gemma 3n. Additionally, the app features a “Prompt Lab” for initiating single-turn tasks like text summarization and rewriting, complete with customizable settings to fine-tune model behavior.

Designed as an experimental Alpha release, Google AI Edge Gallery is open-source under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing for broad usage and modification. Performance may vary depending on device capabilities and model sizes, with larger models requiring more processing time. Google encourages developers to provide feedback to enhance the app’s functionality.

This initiative reflects a growing trend towards on-device AI processing, offering users increased privacy and control by eliminating the need to transmit data to external servers.
